I'm so jazzed that Ploughshares has chosen "Phoenix" - the new story which will be featured in the paperback version of Birds of a Lesser Paradise - for their singles program. You can download "Phoenix" for 99 cents (for your Nook, Kindle, computer, etc) and support not just me, but a super journal who is good to their authors and the literary community.
"Phoenix" takes place in rural Vermont on a goat farm. Phoenix's parents believed they were giving her freedom when they opted not to notify the government of her birth. Now, without a credit card or bank account or Social Security card, her employment options are limited and she's trying to decide what's next, all while working in a crumbling farmhouse with a couple on the brink of splitting up.
I like to show women working, women who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty - that's a big part of this story.
Thanks for supporting Ploughshares and me.
