A few years ago, I became captivated by the story of Allegra Byron, the 5 year old illegitimate child of Claire Clairmont and Lord Byron, who was left to die at a rustic Italian convent.

The smart and generous Dave Daley at Salon has posted my (fictional!) story about her on Salon.

Here's to writerly obsessions.

I just finished your story on Allegra. As always, delicate but precise prose. I shed a few tears at the tragic but expected ending. Your love and personal experience with children shines through. The phrase "her face a tableau of misery" will stay with me a while.

Dear Marilyn -
Such a kind note for you to post; thank you for reading this story of mine. I haven't read it in a year, and I'm sort of looking forward to a re-read myself.
With true gratitude,
Megan

I knew the details but your words brought the emotions alive as well. Byron had a lot to answer for. I do think that he reproached himself sincerely and it seems to be from this point on he improves in conduct and maturity. But at what price!
